Dogs at Crane Beach

Dogs are allowed at Crane Beach only from October 1 to March 31. From April 1 to September 30, no dogs or other pets are allowed at all. In dog season they're limited to set areas of the beach, below the high tide line, with an off-leash zone where they must stay under voice control. Members' dogs are free; nonmembers pay $5 a dog.

Dogs are never allowed on the dune trails, at Castle Hill or in the Crane Wildlife Refuge, in any season. The Trustees' rules apply to service dogs differently (see below).

When Dogs Are Allowed

The Crane Estate regulations split the year in two. From April 1 to September 30, horses, dogs and other pets aren't allowed on Crane Beach. From October 1 to March 31, horses and dogs are allowed in certain areas under special conditions, and all other pets stay home. The search interest follows the rule: people look up Crane Beach dogs most in October, when the season opens.

Dog walkers get the current rules at the beach gate. Your car still needs a beach pass, and October still counts as the extended season for parking prices (see passes and rates).

The No-Leash Zone

The Trustees keep a designated stretch of beach where dogs can be off leash, as long as they respond to voice commands and stay inside it. Flags and signs on the beach mark the boundaries. Inside the zone, a dog must:

Leash Rules Outside the Zone

Everywhere else, including the parking lot and the boardwalks, dogs must be on a physical leash no longer than 6 feet. Each person can bring at most two dogs, each on its own leash. The Trustees can require leashes everywhere if conditions call for it.

Where Dogs Can't Go

Dogs also must not bother seals or other marine mammals resting on the beach. Feeding or disturbing wildlife is banned across the estate.

Why the Rules Are Strict

Crane Beach is one of the world's most important nesting sites for piping plovers, a threatened shorebird. The Trustees say dog traffic can harm wildlife, and dog waste can contaminate shellfish and other marine life near shore. Those are the reasons The Trustees give for limiting dogs.

The Trustees also say they've faced persistent violations and are working with the Town of Ipswich to review the dog policy. People who break the rules can be removed from the property and may be cited and fined under Town of Ipswich bylaws. To report a problem, call 978-356-4354.

Cleaning Up

Pick up after your dog and use the waste bins. Mutt mitt dispensers and bins sit near each boardwalk.

Service Dogs and Horses

The dog and horse handout permits service dogs and excludes comfort or emotional support animals; the estate regulations say service animals are allowed under state law. Horses share the dog season, October 1 to March 31, through a members-only horse trailer permit, with their own rules about riding below the tide line. Those rules are on the rules page.
