Crane Beach Water Temperature

The water at Crane Beach is cold most of the year and only comfortable for many swimmers in late July through early September. NOAA's nearest offshore buoys averaged about 66°F at the surface in July and 67 to 68°F in August over 2016 to 2025, and stayed in the low 40s from February to April. August is the warmest month, with September close behind.

These are offshore buoy readings, not measurements at the beach. Water in the surf can run colder, especially after an upwelling, which The Trustees say has dropped the ocean temperature by more than 10°F in recent years.

Water Temperature by Month

We averaged ten years (2016 to 2025) of surface water readings from two NOAA buoys that bracket Ipswich Bay: Jeffreys Ledge (44098) in the Gulf of Maine to the northeast, and Boston (44013) in Massachusetts Bay to the south. Monthly averages, Jeffreys Ledge first:

The two buoys agree within about 2°F in every month, which suggests the pattern holds across this stretch of coast.

When the Water Is Warmest

The water warms slowly and peaks late: August is warmest, and September is still warmer than June. That makes late August and early September the best time for a swim, and greenhead season is usually over by then (see greenheads). Lifeguards stop at Labor Day, so after that you swim without them.

Why It Can Be Colder Than the Numbers

The Trustees describe an oceanic upwelling in recent years that dropped the ocean temperature by more than 10°F. The Trustees say it pushed menhaden and mackerel close to the beach, which drew striped bass, bluefish, small tuna and, in turn, juvenile great white sharks.

Sharks and Water Closures

After juvenile great whites were confirmed off Crane Beach, The Trustees added safety measures that carry forward each summer. The Ipswich harbormaster patrols off the swim zone daily in season, lifeguards watch from elevated chairs and watercraft, and at least one shark detection buoy is installed. A suspected sighting clears the water; a confirmed one closes it. Passes aren't refunded for water closures.

Swimming Season at Crane Beach

The swimming season, as The Trustees run it, is Memorial Day to Labor Day, when lifeguards and EMTs are on duty from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the bathhouse, outdoor showers and changing areas are open. By the buoy averages, the water climbs from about 50°F at the start of that window to its peak in August, so a late-May swim and a late-August swim are very different experiences. Outside the season you can still go in the water, but with no lifeguards and, from fall to spring, no running water to rinse off.

FAQ

Crane Beach Water Temperature FAQ

How cold is the water at Crane Beach?

Cold. Nearby NOAA buoys averaged about 66°F in July and 67 to 68°F in August from 2016 to 2025, and in the low 40s in late winter. Near-shore water can be colder.

When is the water warmest at Crane Beach?

August, with September close behind. September is still warmer than June.

Are there sharks at Crane Beach?

Juvenile great white sharks have been confirmed off Crane Beach in past years. The Trustees run daily patrols, lifeguard watch and a detection buoy in summer, and close the water after a confirmed sighting.
